Introduction

The French social psychologist, sociologist and amateur physicist Gustave Le Bon was born in 1841. He expounded theories of national traits, racial superiority, herd behaviour and crowd psychology in several of his books, and died in 1931. An extract from the first chapter of his bestselling book The Crowd: A Study of the Popular Mind (1896), introducing the reader to the general characteristics of crowd mentality, is included here.
